How to Safely Pick Up and Hold a Dachshund (Sausage Dog)

Dachshunds, affectionately known as “wiener dogs,” are beloved for their long bodies, short legs, and floppy ears. However, their unique proportions require special care when picking them up.

Their elongated spines are particularly sensitive, so it’s essential to handle them correctly. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to safely pick up and hold your dachshund:

Use Both Hands

Always use both hands when lifting a dachshund. This ensures proper support and minimizes stress on their spine. Follow these steps:

  1. Chest Support: Slip one hand under the dog’s upper body to support its chest and ribcage.

Spread your fingers to distribute the weight over a wider area. Let the dachshund know you’re about to pick them up to avoid startling them.

  1. Rump Support: Gently slide your other hand under the dog’s rump, either directly behind it or just in front of the rear legs. Support the lower body, especially the lower back.

Dachshunds are prone to back and spinal issues, so proper support is crucial.

  1. Lift Gradually: Lift the dachshund slowly, keeping its body level. Avoid letting the lower body hang or droop beneath the upper body.

Maintain a flat back to prevent stress on the spine.

  1. Continuous Support: As you hold the dachshund, ensure its lower back remains well-supported.

Dangling their lower bodies can lead to painful back problems over time. With practice, this will become second nature.

  1. Alternate Hold: Once you’ve mastered the correct technique, you can transition to a “cradle” hold if desired. As long as the dachshund’s back is well-supported and its body remains fairly straight, choose a comfortable position for both of you.

Remember, dachshunds are not like other dogs, so always prioritize their safety and well-being when lifting and holding them.
